1st Insider Series a smash hit

The PRSP Professional Development (ProfDev) Committee’s first seminar-workshop for the year was a smash hit.

The Insider Series: Understanding the Media from Inside Out, jointly presented by the Society and the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI), attracted 68 participants, composed of 18 members and 50 non-members.

In the morning, PDI Corporate Affairs associate Bianca Kasilag introduced the Inquirer group of companies. Inquirer Catalyst Media Marketing and Production head John Labasug presented the Inquirer Catalyst Media, a GPS-based application for bus advertising. PDI desk editor Juliet Javellana then took the audience through the by-the-hour action in the newsroom. Edwin Bacasmas, head of PDI’s photo department, showed photos that made it to the front page as well as accommodated review and critique of photos sent by the participants.

In the afternoon, participants were divided into four groups. Each group was assigned a resource person: PDI assistant business editor Corrie Narisma, associate editor for Online Abel Ulanday, supplement editor
Jong Arcano and senior opinion editor John Nery.

In the one and a half hour session, attendees presented their press releases, received feedback from the editors and asked for tips on editorial matters. This was followed by a talk from John Nery who gave the audience “A Closer Look at the Opinion Section.”

Atty. Raul C. Pangalangan, PDI publisher, held a dialogue on how PDI and their advertisers can improve the standards of paid space to ensure alignment with editorial discipline. He showed samples of advertorials and press releases with grammatical errors.

PDI reader’s advocate Elena E. Pernia, former dean of the UP College of Mass Communication, ended the session with a short exercise on writing a response to the publication.

The next ProfDev workshop will be on broadcast media. ProfDev chair Claire De Leon Papa thanked committee members Hazel Loreto Murphee, Hans Roxas Chua, Adolf Aran, Angel Javier, Harold Geronimo, Brad Geiser and his team, Rondell Torres of Eon and the secretariat for their full support and assistance.

The PRSP ProfDev Committee is committed to providing meaningful opportunities for skills improvement for the purposive practice and professional development of public relations practitioners in the country.
